Have healthcare exchanges lived up to the hype?

Healthcare Exchanges: After the passage of PPACA in 2010 healthcare exchanges (both public and private) showed great promise in curbing rising health costs and helping employers avoid the Cadillac Tax. Six years later where are we?

Topics to be covered

·         What is a healthcare exchange? Public and Private

·         Public Exchanges: Where are we now?

·         Why all the hype about Private Exchanges?

o    What are the advantages of a Private Exchange over a more traditional approach?

o    What are the disadvantages?

o    Has Private Exchange enrollment hit initial projections?

·         What is better? a Single-carrier or Multi-carrier exchange?

·         Should my Private Exchange be fully insured or self-funded?

·         Who builds and manages these exchanges?

·         With the Cadillac Tax being extended how will that impact Private Exchange enrollment?

·         What organizations are a good candidate for a private exchange?

-------------------- SPEAKER --------------------

Scott Kelley, CEBS, CDHC, Founder & President

Scott Kelley has been a national consulting expert for 27 years. He is the former Chairman of the Board of Kelley & Swain and was a Principal at Edgewood Partners Insurance Center after Kelley & Swain was purchased by that firm.

He has helped clients like Campbell Soup, Otis Spunkmeyer Cookies, Foster Farms, S&W Fine Foods, Color Spot Nurseries, Monrovia Growers and Aerojet/Gencorp refine their benefits programs.

As a Certified Employee Benefits Specialist and holder of the National Association of Health Underwriters Certification in Consumer Driven Health, Scott has developed a reputation for bringing innovative solutions to clients in areas that are often overlooked by other consultants. His expertise in the large group market has allowed him to save his clients millions of dollars in benefit costs while often being able to simultaneously improve benefit levels for employees.

He was responsible for implementing the first managed care plan in the history of Campbell Soup which saved the plan $1.9 million out of a $7.7 million budget and prevented the plant from closing for another 20 years. Scott’s approach was adopted by Campbell nationally soon after implementation.

Scott is in constant pursuit of new ideas and concepts that impact employee benefits, such as Value Based Health Plans and Referenced Based Pricing. His unique strategies help his clients develop cutting edge benefit programs which often outperform the national trend of double digit healthcare cost increases.

Scott founded Verus Insurance Services in 2016 with a vision to change the way the industry values clients, employees, and vendors.

Scott lives in Folsom, California and enjoys time with his family.
