Working with the Media
Organizations can get into public relations trouble if too many people attempt to speak to the media on behalf of the organization, especially in emergency situations. This course is designed to help Board members learn how to manage their interactions with the media, including targeting mainstream and non-traditional news outlets, using an understanding of media processes and culture to develop story ideas and turn them into news releases, and then pitching them effectively to reporters, editors and other members of the media. Topics include:
1. Initiating, developing and maintaining relationships with media contacts
2. Devising news stories about your organization and issues related to it
3. Crafting a news release that increases your chance of getting stories and issues covered
